I've enjoyed Galen's photographs and books for many, many, years; they were the next best thing to being in the mountains themselves.

I have known about Galen for many years having first become aware of him back in the late 60s when I first got involved in rock climbing. Although I never met him I followed his exploits as a climber for some years. And I was, of course, an admirer of his magnificent images! Somehow along the way Galen dropped out of my consciousness and so it was with a feeling of profound loss that I learned of his death last year while visiting a nature photography website. Recently I've restarted my own career as a photojournalist after many years of not even owning a camera. Only this time my focus is less upon people than upon nature my life having shifted in that direction 35 years ago. In many ways the making of photographic images is now many times easier for me than in the past, while at the same time being a great deal more rewarding and fulfilling. I have found this at times rather perplexing but while reading Galen's "Mountain Light" over the past several days the scales fell off my eyes. At long last I see just how true is Galen's insistence that worthwhile images are always an expression of a deep inner truth. A recognition of of something essential and true about oneself and the world in which one lives. So that's why 33 years of bald eagle field research makes me a better nature photographer I thought to myself while reading many sections of this profoundly personal and yet universally true book. Today I realized that for the very first time in my life as a photographer I am now in touch with what photography truly means to me, finally fully aware of what it is I hope to do whenever I press the shutter button. Thank you Galen from the bottom of my heart for putting me in touch with me. Thank God you made the effort to share your love of beauty and your means of revealing it to others as beautifully in words as you saw and recorded it on film!

I just finished reading Barbara's book today on a flight from the USA to Canada. This book moved me in ways that are unexplainable touching me deeply with reagrds to my personal and flying goals. Both Galen and Barbara were inspirations to all of us and continue to be sadly missed. The comnfort of Galen's gift and Barbara's inspiration will stay with me forever. When I learned of their untimely deaths and the circumstances surrounding the accident, the world lost two special people. I am certain however there is two stars shining brightly tonight.

I first heard of Galen Rowell when I was about 16. His name always stuck in my head. Now that I'm reading into his life 25 years later I'm inspired, amazed and saddened by his story.

I became involved in climbing as a teenager in the 70s. I read Rowell's book "The Vertical World of Yosemite" in 1976. I was inspired by not just the images but his outlook. "In the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods" about the Bonnington ascent of the SW Face of Everest was another favorite. The photographs were illuminating. I was lucky enough to have breakfast with Galen in the late 90s and give him a lift to the airport. We talked about climbing, photography and getting older. His views on all three topics still have an impact on me today. His photographs allowed me to see the world through different eyes. They also let me see a world I would never get to visit. His use of the lens enriched my life.

"Galen Running" A high Sierra peak looked at a distant brother With a sad and wistful eye, And asked in an empty tone---Why? There was once happier days When our summer flowers smiled at the sky, As a rugged man with a camera ran by.

The light in Galen's works is the Light of God. "Thank you Galen" is all that I can do now!

Galen has mastered the art of light at that specific moment of an image--- a true artist of time and to come.

I had a passion for photography since 1968 when my Grandmother gave me a kodak camera for a field trip. A friend brought a post card from Yosemite in 1982 of Galen standing befor a crazy red sunrise. I kept that photo where I could see it almost everyday. It was my inspiration for what is great photography. Then I had an oppertunity to take the workshop in 2005. It changed my life. What a great and inspiring team. What an inspiration to the world of photography you were Galen. Indeed, unforgetable. Thanks Mr. Black and Company for carrying on the tradition. I now produce fine art images and show in premier galleries in Lake Tahoe. My dreams have come true!! Thank you Galen! I wish I could have met you and shook your hand! Ten years into my photography hobby, and I still find Galen my favorite source of inspiration when enjoying a particularly beautiful natural setting. The works and philosophy and Galen and Barbara serve me calming inspiration and to me, they are very much alive, still.

It has been several years now since Galen and Barbara have been gone.I'm saddened when I think of what a loss to our world now that these two souls have been taken from us far too soon. I have followed Galen's career from his 1st book and added several others he has written to my library over the years. I frequent the Bishop area several times a year as both an avid fisherman, photographer,ex-climber and writer myself. On one particularly cold but sunny morning in Bishop, I ran into Galen and Barbara at Intake II . He was photographing the lake after a recent snowstorm covered the aspens and landscape in fresh white snow. It was a very beautiful morning and I was face to face with my photography mentor. What a thrill to meet them in person ! I told him that I was a huge fan of his works and wished I had a copy of one of his books for him to autograph for me. I felt so connected to Galen that morning, both of us knowing a great opportunity of getting a great photograph at the same time and place. I have visited the gallery many times since their passing and fondly remember the day we had met. When we look at his and Barbara's works I'm reminded that they have left this earthly place but not our memories with the images they left behind for us to enjoy. Dave Finkelstein

I sat in the library today and slowly gazed at the awe-inspiring photographs of Mountain Light. I could feel the spirituality emanating from the image. Thanks Galen for your timeless photography.

Galen was by far, the best landscape photographer in the world and actually although he is no longer with us, in a way he still is with the unbelievable work he left behind. Whenever I want to be inspired I pick up one of his books and gaze in awe at the work. God Bless Galen and Barbara, they are both sorely missed.

I have visited Mountain Light gallery several times in Bishop and was thawed to see those huge prints of Galen. A true inspiration for ALL the next generation landscapers, be it a professional or an amateur. I couldn't say anything more of what has already been said. Galen's passion and work has been my primary source of inspiration and I have learn to see landscapes in new perspective and I wish I could get an inch of what he has achieved through his photography. May his soul rest in piece. regards, ~deb

I recently had the great honor of visiting Mountain Light Gallery for the first time. I have been a big fan of Mr. Rowell's work and philosophys for over 20 years. I am a amature landscape photographer. When I walked into Mountain Light I could physically feel that I had entered a very special place. I am truly inspired by Galen and Barbara and I hope to attend a workshop one day. I am from Chicago Illinois but my heart will always be in the grande Sierras, the most beautiful of all mountain ranges. Thank you.

I just came across the 1989 Ntl Geo. which has an article by him on the Muir Trail. I remember going to Mtn. Light in Emeryville while attending Berkeley and meeting Galen. I remember his firm handshake, shock of hair and broad smile. As a wildland firefighter in Plumas county and later climbing Whitney.whenever I am in the mountains really, I think of Galen Rowell. There is a psychic dislocation, like a bone out of place, when I consider that he is gone. What a good man. What great contributions he made in mountaineering, photography, and climbing. I cannot go to the southern east side, yosemite, or anywhere beautiful above 4k ft. without thinking about my hero Galen Rowell.

The photographs are looking as great as ever, timeless perhaps, and I can't wait for the books to be reprinted.

Just returned from Merriam Lake Idaho. Galen would have loved the Alpine gem and I thought of him as I photographed. Thanks for the inspiration and influence.
