I used to work for The New Lab a number of years ago, I had the great opportunity to see a lot of Galen's work up close since I did his personel dupes. It is amazing to hold one of these slides in one's hand and know it was created in a different world and with one of the masters of photography. The feeling cannot be described. Here I am in a darkroom and looking up close to an original with a 10x lupe to my eye. The feeling is amazing. When I heard of their death I was greatly saddened, and without constraint cried. I think he was one of the true original photographers this planet has had. On a lighter note, One time I was holding one of his slides and I was transfixed and just thought of the image for days.

Awe-inspiring photographs and articles from America's favorite nature/photojournalist couple, Galen and Barbara Rowell. May they rest in peace and their works inspire others many years to come!

I found this website only tonight. I love their photos so much! But at the same time, I was so astonished to come to know that they have left this world. Looking at these smiling faces, I can stop my tears from rolling down....

I enjoyed my second visit to the Mountain Light Gallery on February 17, 2004. It is amazing to view so many of Galen's greatest images in such a wonderful setting. I sensed Galen and Barbara's presence while I was there. Reproductions of his work just do not capture the breathtaking beauty, color, sharpness and awe one experiences when viewing them in person. Galen and Barbara were a gift to the world who will live on forever through their art, writings, humanitarian ventures and efforts to preserve our planet.

I'm saddened to read of Galen and Barbara's deaths. I enjoy browsing this great collection of photos but would like to see larger images on the site. I hope to see some of these images in large print.

I never met Galen, but I was inspired and moved by his work.

I first saw his work in a gallery in San Francisco, the day after my wife and I made a visit to the Muir Woods. The photographs overwhelmed me. He was scheduled for a book signing there, but it was going to be the week after we left. I bought his Yosemite book leaving it and a personal note with an employee for him to sign. I will always treasure the book with the personal inscription he made for us.

I am an amateur landscape photographer myself. While my photographs can’t hold a candle to Galen’s, I’d like to think his influence is in there.

My father was the one who introduced me to Galen's work when he gave me a copy of Mountain Light. At the time I was just getting into photography and Galen's images and writing did nothing but inspire me. Galen went beyond being just a photographer. He was an artist, a very good photojournalist, an advocate for the environment and cultures of the world, and someone who truly believed in what he did. My hat goes off to him and his wife, who played a huge part in bringing Galen's work to the world.

I have on my wall Machu Picchu, NGL511 that was purchased through National Geographic in 1995. This breathtaking vista has been my inspiration for so many years. It is my ultimate fantasy to be standing on that very mountaintop, and I may someday.

What Galen and Barbara Rowell have given to so many is the unique ability to live some of our dreams just by studying a photograph. The ability to visit some far-away valley or ocean just by stepping into the amazing reality of their photographs. They have left their imprint on many lives.
Thank you,

I remember the day I heard of Galen's and Barbara's tragic accident. I could not imagine the loss of Galen's gifts. I know I never quite "got" Galens mystical relationship with the world of photography. But I loved his work.

I quit my aerospace engineering job of 14 years and started my own photography business, after reading most of Galen's books and having had a passion for photography since I was 14 years old. The Rowells helped me make a major turning point in my life which I have reached true happiness through. I will never forget them as they live forever in their writings and photographs which project a lifestyle which was richer and fuller than any kings, queens or corporate billionaire's. They are missed but never forgotten.

Having spent some extremely pleasant days with Galen in Northeast Greenland in the 1993, while being a member of The Danish Special Forces there - and having travelled with Galen on Dog Sled on photo shoot, it was with tremendous sadness that I learned of the Rowels tragic deaths only last Friday 12th of December 2004 - 16 months after that terrible crash.

It had been a while since our last contact, but everytime I had a photography question, wanted a copy of some of the photoes he shot of us, he was always being positive and most helpful.

I am saddend to learn that the world has lost a great person and a gifted photographer!!

All my thoughts goes to colleagues, friends and family to Galen and Barbara!!!

I just was given a calendar with your photographs on them. They are the most beautiful. I love to take photographs too, no one could ever compare to the beauty of yours. I wish I would have seen them sooner.

Whenever I received my monthly issue of OP I would quickly turn to read Galen's column, not only for the photographs but also for his words. I figured that after a few months I would stop missing his column but that hasn't happened.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Galen I feel as though I lost a very good friend and mentor. Whenever I take a photograph I find that I'm asking myself, "How would Galen shoot this?"

Galen and Barbara left this world on my birthday. It was the saddest birthday I ever had.

Dear all,

Thank you for everything. You inspire me so much ! I sit behind a computer most of the day although/because I'm working for an environmental organization. Your work tells me day in day out what I'm doing it for.

Kind regards,
