I recently finished reading "High and Wild". Galen lived the life many of us author/adventurers dream about daily. His writing and photography is wonderful, and will transcend time. I really related to his stories and philosophies on our shrinking wilderness areas. I had similar adventures on a smaller scale in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. I'm sad that he is gone, but happy he was so good at documenting his adventures for others to share. Happy Trails to his surviving family, friends and fans . . . author of "Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection".

While checking out his website, tonight I found out that the great lensman was dead! I'm shocked and saddened to hear about the tragic death of the Rowels. It would've been nice to meet Galen here in Pakistan. Perhaps we'll at a differnet level someday . . . Peace.

I live (and work) in Yosemite Valley. I've just finished reading Galen's book, Inner Game to Outdoor Photography; wow!; I'm sorry that I never had the opportunity to meet Galen. His work and his photos truly inspire... I think that I am the better for the legacy that he left behind. If you happen to be in THE VALLEY; please feel free to stop by and say hi!

I have been moving about a lot over the last 12 mths and logged on to mountainlight.com today for the first time in months. I was shocked to learn of the tragic deaths of Galen and Barbara Rowell. I learned of their work from a program on CNN some years ago, subsequently found the website and am now proud owner of several books. I cannot sufficiently express the awe I feel for the vision, committment and love communicated by their work. It helped me to learn a lot about nature, the earth and myself. The world is a much, much poorer place without them

I was assigned Galen Rowell for a project in my Digital Photo class this year. At first, I didn't want to do a report on him because I had never heard of him before. I looked him up on a search and found this site. As soon as I saw one of his pictures I was hooked. There is something about his photographs that just speak out. I am now a BIG FAN of his. It only took one picture to get me hooked. I have never been that way about anything before. I just wanted to say thanks for the great pictures.

Within a month of emmigrating to the US from South Africa, I picked up a copy of Galen Rowell's Vision in Kings Canyon NP book store. With little but 2 suitcases and a camera bag between my wife and I, this book set me on a path I still follow. It gave direction to my photography, and career, and was tweaked right every now and again by Galen's OP column. I'd not heard of him until Kings Canyon; now I wonder that anyone hasn't. I would have liked to have thanked Galen personally.

Visiting the Bishop, Ca gallery this weekend, I was in awe of the excellent body of work created by these talented people. You can almost feel the presence of the Rowell's in the room.

Your inspirational images have had a profound impact on my photography. Furthermore, you have inspired my wife. It is so unfortunate that you and your wife perished so early in life! You have contributed much to the art of photography. I have enjoyed every book written by you and hope that the staff of Mountain Light continue to sell your magnificent photographs.

I only had the pleasure of viewing Galen and Barbaras beautiful work after their tragic deaths. For me, the picking up of one of these books in an Adelaide bookstore has indeed opened my eyes up to the wonderful creative possibilities of the 35mm image. Their conection with the art is a true inspiration to anybody serious about outdoor adventure photography. Galens "Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" is as close a modern bible as your likely to find anywhere on the subject. Thank you for the inspiration to pursue my own visions on film.

I never met the Galens, but I was familiar with their work before their sudden passing. I made the trip to the Sierras and climbed Mt. Whitney August 15 (something very amazing to this simple Georgia boy). I then visited the studio in Bishop and was even more impressed with the works of this great couple. Their lives are an inspiration to me and my wife to live life to the fullest, and their work is an inspiration in ways I cannot explain. My wife and I are a young couple and have just started our life together. We are saving now so that our first real piece of artwork can be a Rowell. Thank you all at the Mountain Light studio for keeping and sharing the amazing work online and in the studio.

On the one-year anniversary of their passing, I spent a few days photographing in the White Mountains that tower over Galen and Barbara's Bishop home. No doubt I trekked over many of the same paths Galen walked while shooting the Bristle Cone pines and the stark landscape above 10,000 feet.
Lessons from his many books and memories of his amazing images provided guidance as I set up my own photographs.
Galen was an excellent and thoughtful writer. He was the photographer that had the greatest influence on my own outdoor and landscape photography. I was privileged to have met him during a workshop.
His powerful images from the remaining wild places on the planet invoke a personal determination of preservation. Indeed, we all see a much more beautiful world worth keeping because of Galen.

I met Galen in Tuscon in 1992 and joined him for several hikes near there. His energy and passion for his subject elevated my photography. His photos do not need a credit - they are recognizable immediately by there purity and depcition of the light.

As one who considered photography as a career, but chose a different path, I have been in awe of G & B's work for years. Some thoughts near the anniversary of their passing: I cherish owning a signed "The Art of Adventure". I cherish the memory of attending a work shop years ago. Most of all I cherish the hand shake after a few minutes chat.

On this day, August 11, 2003, the first anniversary of the tragedy that took away 4 good people from us, let us remember and take comfort from what they gave to us.
Barbara and Galen, you are an inspiration to us forever! May we see you in the brilliance of the light, may we feel you in the comfort of a kind wind.
