My prayers go out to Galen & Barbras family for this uncomprehensible loss. The photographic world has lost two of its most artistic masters. If heaven is half as beautiful as the pictures they captured, then they are truly in paradise.

I took Galen's workshop in '94 and not only learned alot but was thrilled to go to his Berkely home for beer and pizza with Galen and Barbera. They were very warm people and it is still a shock that they are gone.

I first met Galen at a seminar he held here in Atlanta. I had long been inspired by both his images and writings, and it was at his workshop that I decided to finally get serious about my photography. Fortunately, I was able to participate in his three-day workshop in October 2000, then his one-day digital printing seminar with Bob Cornelis. All this year, I've been looking forward to participating in Galen's four-day Advanced workshop this coming October. Now, of course, that won't happen. But I'll be forever grateful for his inspiration, guidance, books, and a print I have in my office. I'm sure I will feel the magnitude of the loss of Galen and Barbara for a long time.

It is far to seldom that a person has the ablilty to communicate in such crystal clear terms things and ideas such as Galen has in Outdoor Photography. I am a flegling photographer that hopes to some day be able to photograph and communicate at a level close to Galen Rowell.

I learned the heartbreaking news just after returning from a morning hike near Zion National Park today. Galen was fresh on my mind, as I had been striving with my camera to capture not just the grandeur in front of me, but the serene exhilaration within. For those of us lucky enough to have met Galen and Barbara, I doubt a week passes that we do not have such memories of them--as teachers, as inspirations, as friends. Like his images, Galen`s writing was a study in grace and balance, one of the most poetic voices among photographers. I will miss it dearly. With my deep condolences to their families and colleagues, I also send the equally deep assurance that the Rowells remain very much with us. They walk beside us on every step as we venture into the nature they did so much to celebrate and preserve, and which we appreciate all the more keenly because of them.

Many years ago my husband, children and I shared a Thanksgiving dinner with Galen and Barbara at a mutual friend's home. It was a modest, informal, yet warm and festive dinner. I will always cherish the memory of that casual intimate Thanksgiving with Galen, Barbara and friends. This is a sad loss for the artistic community as well as for those of us who fortunately crossed paths with the Rowells in everyday life. They were sincere, warm, and unprepentious people.

Photography has lost two of the great ones with the untimely deaths of the Rowells. If one could imagine such a tragedy it would occur in some far flung dangerous corner of the world and not in Galen's own backyard which by his own account surpassed any of the exotic places he has set foot. He brought these far away places and some not so far away into our homes with the publication of his wonderful books and they will serve as an inspiration for me to strive for photographic excellence. I also have a love for the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra and Galen has inspired me to spend more time there as his photographs have shown me another side to an area I all too often merely pass through. I visited the gallery two weeks ago and was once again awed by his skills. I think he would be pleased with the work I did in the Bristlecone area. After photographing a wonderful tree in the setting sun I turned to my friend and said that I had just taken a Galen Rowell photograph. I hope his work will live on through the gallery and that future photographers will find as much inspiration and respect for the landscape as Galen and Barbara did. May the Rowell's family, as well as the families of others killed in the crash, find peace and comfort in their respective faiths.

I have just read the terrible news about the loss of Galen and Barbara Rowell and deeply deeply saddened. My own professional photographic career was sparked and inspired by reading Galen's unique approach to his work in The Art of Adventure Photography and Mountain Light. Hooked on this new awareness of how I could see and take photographs, I became a student, a remote, unknown pupil of his, learning so much about not only photography but about how our interaction with the great outdoors goes far deeper than simply hiking or climbing or taking photos. I know I was not alone in finding powerful inspiration in his words and images, in his books and columns. We will be forever thankful to Galen for his images and words and to him and Barbara for the impact that their great business, Mountain Light, has had on us. It is a sad day indeed that two people who brought so much to so many people around the world are no longer here with us. They will be greatly missed, though their images and books will forever serve as a reminder of their superlative photographic skills and passion for their subjects and their gentle, caring, humble approach to life. If we can live our lives at just one half the level that they lived theirs then our lives will be rich indeed. The world is a better place for Galen and Barbara having been in it. Our thoughts are with their families and everyone at Mountain Light.

Galen has been a great inspiration to me. His work and writings have moved my photography to another level. I only met Galen once at a seminar in the Phila. area. but once is all you really need to see what kind of individual he was. He will live on in our memories and hearts, as we try to emulate this great talent. My sincere sympathies to the families.

I am truly saddened to hear of the news of Galen and Barbara's accident. I met them both through my sister, Lori Kearney and her husband, Kevin O'Farrell. They were both very close to them. I know Kevin and Lori had been friends with them for many years, and cherished the friendship. I was lucky enough to spend an evening at their home in Berkley Hills one Christmas for a party. They were lovely humans in every way. My prayers are with their surviving relatives. Galen and Barbara will be deeply missed. I feel honored to have met them. Two more angels we know by name.

We all have been very blessed a fortunate to have had someone as special as the Rowell's in our midst. The photos and journalistic experrtise they both possessed provided me with such a spcial feeling of "just get out there and go see and enjoy all of the beauty and grandeur of this world." My prayers are with them and their family. Thank you very much. Inspiration and joy will still be there is the incredible legacy they have left us.

I first met Galen and Barbara in their new Bishop, California gallery in 2001 and visited with them for approximately one hour. By the time I had left they made me feel like one of the family. When I first read the tragic news I couldn't believe it was true. Galen and Barbara will be greatly missed by nature photographers, the Eastern Sierra community, and all others whose lives they touched!

I am very lucky in that I was able to meet Galen in July of 2001. I spent a week in Yosemite, and was very fortunate in that Galen was around the gallery that week. I drove up out of the Valley, along the Tioga Road, by Mono Lake, and all the way south to Bishop just to see the gallery and meet my hero and inspiration. Galen is that rare and magical combination of a great talent who also happens to be a great teacher. I am consciously using the present tense, because his teachings and vision have been with me every day since a friend recommended "Mountain Light," and they continue to be with me. His books are on my coffee table and by my bed all the time. I learn more every time I read them, even re-reading the same passages over and over, because I never get it all the first time. Galen was so kind to me when I visited. I was just another fan, there with my Gitzo tripod and Nikons, probably asking questions that he's heard a million times. But he graciously and thoughtfully answered my questions with great patience. I am just so sad and so shocked. My heart aches for Yosemite and Bishop, but at the same time I know it will be painful to visit them again, knowing that I cannot just drive up "around the corner" to go see my beloved teacher. Photography books and magazines so often just re-hash the same old basic stuff that is not very helpful. But Galen's writings, including his monthly columns, are always refreshing and insightful. His commitment to rigorous thought and careful articulation is so fundamental that it massively transcends photography, and instead speaks with power to the possibility of written communication, the art of teaching, and thorough analysis as the ultimate liberator of expression. I would love to hear more from others who would like to share thoughts. I'm at: anseladams2002@hotmail.com (please forgive the e-mail address, it was all I could think of when I made it up a while ago; I know my place as a humble amateur). To Galen's family, staff, and friends: I am so sorry. My heart aches with you and for you.

It is very difficult to elicit words at this time, but my sympathies are with friends and family of the Rowell's. This is a huge loss of the foremost photographer of his time. I have enjoyed Galen's work for the better part of my life. May Galen and Barbara rest in peace. God bless.
