Dear Galen & Barbara: As we approach the 1-year anniversary of your tragic loss on 8-11-02 in just a few more days ("Yahrzeit"), you should know just how much you are still missed. Even so, your memories remain for us as a blessing, in that you have left behind for us tangible reminders of yourselves by way of your photos, books, gallery, and most importantly, your legacy. To paraphrase Khalil Gibran, here is a fitting tribute a year later: "When you part from your friends, grieve not:for that which you love most in them may become clearer in their absence, as the mountain, to the climber, is often clearer from the plain." How True! We will never be able to return to the Sierra, the Andes, the Himalaya, the Karakorum (i.e.,"Galenkorum"), without thinking of both of you. For we have now seen those incredibly beautiful places through your eyes, and adopted them as our own. Sadly, you have now passed into the histories of those places, yet they are living histories. This is your final and lasting gift to us, realized as even more precious in your profound absence. May Great Elohim keep you always in His eternal loving embrace. Sincerly, Keith A. Liker/Robin Daus & family.

Galen's sensitive work is part of my nostalgia to a trip to the Himalayas. Despite the long period since I had his book "Many people come, looking looking" it is an unforgettable message.

Its been a while now since Galen and Barbara have been gone. There is still a huge void that needs to be filled somehow, someway. Just thinking of all the photography that we have missed and will miss is a very sad thing. Please know we miss you and your passion, your skills, and unmatched love for photography and nature.....God bless!!

One year ago today I left Bishop after Galen's workshop and headed north. The next morning at dawn there were two perfect lenticulars over Mono Lake. Nobody there but me and those two clouds. Thanks for that picture, for the knowledge, and most of all for the inspiration. And thank you to the staff of Mountain Light for keeping on keeping on.

I had the good sense to visit Mountain Light on a couple of occasions when I lived in the Bay Area. Although I never met Galen or Barbara, their books moved me and still seem to get better everytime I pick them up. It was truly a sad day when they passed. God Bless.

I regret that I never had the opportunity to meet Galen & Barbara. I have long dabbled in landscape photography since I bought my first 35mm SLR. I began to come into contact with Galen's work after a visit by Jim Whittaker to Golden West College in Huntington Beach in 1977, after the failed American K-2 attempt. I heard the news about his and Barbara's death while working at the Jordan Peak fire lookout in Sequoia National Forest last summer. I'm still saddened when I think about their leaving us. But, what a gift they gave to us all. I pray that they are spending eternity with the Supreme Artist and Author of all creativity.

I used to subscribe to Outdoor Photographer magazine and flip right to Galen Rowell's article first thing. Found the terrible news online via a Mt Everest website last fall...I am so profoundly sorry, what a loss, what a talented wonderful couple.

I recently read Barbara's book titled "Flying South, A Pilot's Inner Journey" and it was wonderful. Although I never met Barbara, I felt like she and Galen were personal friends after reading her insightful story. She was an incredibly brave, sensitive and talented lady.

I have followed Galen throughout his career and always considered him my living muse. someone with skills, talents and energy I always envied. As an extensive long time traveler of the Sierra and a passionate lover of the wilds I felt my soul and heart understood his soul and heart. We were brothers, him being my "Big Brother" And I always wanted to be just like him. I'm sad that he passed on, but I will feel his spirit in the wild places of the Sierra. Good Bye, Brother

The title in National Geographic stuck me with a sense of impending tragedy -- Galen Rowell's Final Trek. Why Final? I flipped through the pages looking for the answer that I don't want to find. And it was there. How very sorrowful. I was introduced to Galen Rowell's work through a Nikon camera brochure, and since then I have followed and admired his great body of work in his many books. The pool of photography has lost a big cornerstone.

How incredibly sad I was when I opened my National Geographic just now to see the article titled "Galen Rowell's Final Trek" and then rush on to read what happened with a heart heavy and with expectation of news I didn't want to hear. I first took photos at Yosemite on my first visit to the US in 1977 when I was 16 and visited the Mountain Light gallery in 1989 on another trip as by then I was a keen admirer of Galen's deep talent as an adventurer and photographer. I wish I could have met him. My thoughts are with Galen and Barbara's families. regards, Alex McNaught.
