Godspeed, Galen and Barbara. Your published images and books have inspired many memorable road and wilderness trips. Indeed, they have been one of the prime motivating factors in my lifelong interest in the wilderness and environmental issues.

I have long since had a fondness and appreciation for photography and photographers. UNFORTUNATELY, it was not until recently (i.e.,becoming a subscriber to National Geographic's Magazine)that I was FORTUNATE and dare I say, "blessed" even to have become acquainted with Galen Rowell's blessing/gift from God. What a gifted and talented man. And what a loss. I (too) have a love and passion for photography. I feel, no, I believe that with photography, I am capturing memories and stopping time...even if only for a milisecond. I'll believe (because I choose to) that Mr. Rowell shared that sentiment. May God bless your family, which (of course) includes "Mountain Light".

I first met Galen Rowell at an intimate slide showing in Palo Alto California in 1982. He was just getting started and a genuine wilderness lover and talented photographer. I have always remembered that very low key gathering because he was obviously someone special. When my son was born in 1988 I sat in the wee hours of the morning with him thinking of a name... Galen. I chose it in part because of my respect and admiration for a great man of the wilds and the mountain light, a place and reality I hoped my children would learn to love as well.

My artistic talents as a photographer were inspired by two people. Fine B&W by Ansel Adams and glorious color by Galen Rowell. Each of these masters has a special place in my heart for the contributions they made during their lifetimes. I know that Galens images will continue to inspire for many, many years to come. May the Alpen Glow forever be bright and warm.

I would like to give credit where it is due: Galen sparked a fire in my heart to find the deeper light in an image and life when I was young. Today I am starting my own journey in memory of Galen and Barbara, by starting a new business. Keep up the good work at Mountain Light!

Galen brought a spiritual beauty to his art...which is a projection of the soul within... and can only be achieved by those who follow the path of their heart

I'm very saddened by the accident. Galen has been a great inspiration and will continue to be through his books/works. I was fortunate to meet him at a Photography seminar in Golden, Colorado, a few years ago. During that event, I met with him to have him autograph one of his books for me. Afterwards, the seminar attendants had a photo shoot which we then chose our favorite images and had a slide show. It was ironic that the images that Galen shot were almost identical to the ones I shot - and he had shot them the day before. :) I would like to mention that of all the photography books I have accumulated since 1980, Galen's was the first I read (every word) from cover to cover...and enjoyed it! You can't say that for all photography books. :) He was an incredible writer and photographer and he will be missed, but will continue to live through his works and books. Thank you all for keeping his vision and works thriving.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Galen and Barbara.I became aware of Galen's work through "Outdoor Photographer". His website, photos, books and video (with Frans Lanting)provided an inspiration to me and challenged me as to the standards that my photography should reach. I will cherish the knowledge that I have gained from him and I hope to pass it on. Thank you,

Last week I passed through Bishop CA and visited the wonderful Mountain Light gallery. There are no words to convey how incredible it was to see dozens of Galen and Barbara's images in person. The reality that there will be no more images created by these two gifted artists is something I cannot deal with. I left something personal behind at Mountain Light during that visit ..... several of my teardrops fell to the floor.

Galen's photographs are absolutely wonderful... it saddens me to think that such a live spirit and wonderful talent could be lost so early. My father actually knew him, and I believe that I may have met him once when I was very young, but I never knew the absolute beauty of his photography until fairly recently. He has left a wonderful legacy, I can think of none better than thousands upon thousands of pictures of the natural world for people to cherish for generations to come. I know I'll put a print or two on my wall.

I have loved and been inspired by Galen's work for a long time. Though I never met them, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Barbara and Galen and very grateful to them for the incredible gifts that they have left us, the exquisite images of our world. My life is so much richer for it.

AS A VIDEO-PHOTOGRAPHER AND A CHILEAN CITIZEN ALWAYS APPRECIATE THE QUALITY OF THOSE WONDERFULL PICTURES OF TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK LOCATED IN THE SOUTH OF MY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (CHILEAN PATAGONIA) WHERE I PLANNED TO GO VERY SOON IN COMPANY OF MY FIANCEE . IN HIS OR I SHOULD SAY IN THEIR HONOR I WILL TAKE THE "SAME" PICTURE "SELF-PORTRAIT IN PATAGONIA" BUT WITH MY FIANCEE FACING THE CUERNOS DEL PAINE. YES I WILL HAVE A LITTLE THOUGHT ABOUT THEM AT THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT. GOD BLESS THEM...

I recall gaining inspiration for my photography from Galen's incredible images even in the early 80's. Now, though I work in an entirely different artform, I still strive to create the same sense of awe and respect for the planet that Galen Rowell so obviously had. I have never met the Rowells, but I have been deeply saddened by their passing.

I am still trying to come to terms with the loss of Galen and Barbara. Galen's work has inspired a lifetimes interest in the Himalaya and set me on the road to a long term love affair with climbing & trekking, particularly in Nepal. You know, Galen's talent was unique amongst men. Anybody who has battled to "capture the moment" in some of the locations / situations he succeeded in will know just what amazing creativity the man possessed. I always felt that his work never receieved the critical acclaim it deserved in the UK. I know I am a better photographer for studying his work although know that I'll never achieve a fraction of his ability. I met Galen only one although e-mailed him a few times and found him charismatic. His "home" at Mountain Light will always be a second home to me now when ever I am in the Bay Area. To sit silently and ponder over images that have become as familiar to many of us as family portraits .. I somehow sense that his spirit will always be with me. God bless Galen and Barbara ..... God bless you families and keep you strong. The world has lost one of it's most caring and talented citizens. Namaste friend .....

The loss of Galen Rowell is a loss for all who love to look at the amazing miracle of life. Galen was the only photographer that I know who could make us realize that nature is a very complex, delicate and amazingly beautiful entity. As a nature photographer, I've always been inspired by his work. For me he is the only photographer who has raised the bar of nature photography at a level where his images are no longer recording lights and shadows but are in themselves a statement. The statement of nature, of life itself, and Galen was there, finding for the right angle, waiting for the right light, the right time to capture it. I will miss him and his amazing pictures
