I met Galen back in 1995, and attended a photography lecture and slide show presentation. I would often visit the Gallery during Bay Area trips. I unfortunately always postponed attending Galen's workshops, and how we learn. I'm sorry to not have known Galen and Barbara better. His images, his vision, his voice, sparked my interest in adventure, travel, and documentary photography. And who couldn't love his dog Kumbhu. Tashi Delek, Namaste, to you both.

Galen Rowell has become a huge inspiration for my photography, and everything that I enjoy, as well as living my life to the fullest every single day. His visions of the earth evoke something in my heart that I have never felt before. In the same way that the melodies of music move my body, The rhythm of light and mountains in Galens visions flow through me like a calm misty morning relaxing my body and soul, while at the same time they shake me like the deep rumbling bass of a thunder storm inspiring me to achieve my own visions in every single aspect of my life. The great ones never seem to have enough time in this world and my deepest sympathy goes out to all the friends and family who were blessed enough to have known him, to the beautiful Mother and Father of Galen Rowell and of course to Mrs.Barbara Rowell because behind every great man stands an amazing woman. Be strong and the beauty of life will prolong! Sincerly, Cameron Unger

Having just returned from the Bishop area myself recently, I was reminded just how strikingly beautifull the High Sierra can be at any time of the year. Galen was the only photographer that I know of who could bring this striking contrast into your living room and make you feel as though you had just stepped outside and felt the brisk sierra air for yourself!

I will be traveling through Bishop on my way to a ski trip in Mammoth Lakes in February 2003 and I am so looking forward to visiting the Mountain Light gallery. I have considered Galen to be my photographic inspiration for many years and it will be breathtaking to see his work in person. He was and always will be the Master.

Whenever I viewed one of Galen Rowell's incredible works of art, I felt fortunate. Few photographers have made me so excited about the outdoors. He had a wonderful gift and he shared it whenever he could. The world was a better place because Galen traveled upon it.

I want to send my regards to the families and friends! Galen was my idol when it came to photography, philosophy, and his sense of spirituality! His monthly article in "Outdoor Photographer" has inspired me to keep me camera clicking and my spirit alive. He will be greatly missed by all!

By chance today, I came upon this website of photographs that truly captures the soul, and many moods of nature...not since Ansel Adams have I been privileged to share in such wondrous beauty, captured in time forever. I am very sorry to hear about the loss of these two beautiful human beings; their work has given me an insight into serene places far beyond the noisy, concrete life-style of everyday city life, and they will surely be missed by all. May God bless them and their families...

As a middle class factory worker who loves the outdoors and especially the mountains of the world, Galen Rowell has taken me to world's mountains in spirit, wonder and dream like no one else. His books dealing with central asian travel, exploration and climbing are unparalled. I could never afford to travel to such places in body but i thank Galen for taking me there countlessly in his photos and words. Galen was my idol, he was who I should have been. May God Bless Galen and Barbara's work and the lives they touched.

I am looking forward to my first visit to the Bishop Gallery. Galen's photos are the finest nature/landscape shots I have ever seen. He and Barbara left the world in better shape than they found it and we are all more spiritually fulfilled because of them.

I had marked the mountain light web site taking a break from work. Galen and Barbara were two sides of the same coin. Different yet the same which in Sankskrit is Acinta bedda bedda tatva. (sp) They gave unselfishly to all the causes they were involved with. So many Tibetans and Nepalis have a better life because of their untiring work towards bettering the lives of those less fortunate. Two beautiful lightworkers in every sense. Whenever they were asked if they would donate time, energy or money to help out a Tibetan cause. They were always so generous with time, their beautiful space in Emeryville, their advice in general they opened their hearts to all of us and we are all saddened by their untimely passing. Until the next time around Galen and Barbara tukju che. Sharon I will miss you both very much

I just became aware of the works by Galen through Barbara's book which I happen to order long before it was printed due to my interest in aviation. After reading Barbara's book I was inspired enough to finally fulfill my life long dream of learning to fly. Of course now I'm interested in learning more about Galen's work too. Although I never meet Barbara & Galen in person, I was sad whith the news of their tragic accident. My heartfelt condolences, albeit late, to Barbara and Galen families.

Photography and the written word are our best attempt at escaping our inescapable mortality. With the click of a shutter or the pass of a pencil upon the page we give those that follow us a glimpse into the most magical moments of our lives and we preserve, in each instance, a bit of ourselves. The Rowell's were masters of this craft and their transcendence of time is quite possibly their greatest achievement. Their words and images give us the amazing opportunity to get to know them even after their passing from this place and by doing so we can greatly heighten our appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are each given so little time. Galen and Barbara Rowell are shining examples of people who have made the most of it.

I'm proud to remember my time at Faulkner Color Lab in San Francisco, partially because we worked with such focus to serve Galen. We recognized at the time that we were being honored by his patronage. We were awed by what he showed us, deep in a factory-like photo lab. We brought our best to him. All the craftspeople who touched his work, from color printers to retouchers (one once removed myriad pesky white dots from a Karakoram night sky !), to print finishers and mounters, all knew they were engaged in something important with Galen.
