The beauty of the Camera still is its immortality, it can never be replaced, it is unique, as was Galen Rowell's gift to the world. Whilst his departure from this life will be mourned we can all celebrate the richness that he brought to us all. I can recall how utterly engrossed and captivated I was upon my introduction to his work in Mountain Light. That book has always remained my inspiration, something to aspire to. I wish his and Barbara's respective families peace and pride of their legacy.

I am a Nikon user who greatly benefited from Galen's teachings in the Nikon video series. He was an inspirational photographer, an excellent teacher and one of this planet's greatest photographers. I only heard of his and Barbara's deaths yesterday (Oct. 6, 2002) and was very saddened by the news. I will miss his articles and appearances in videos and specials. More significantly, we will all miss the wonderful visions he had and brought to the world through the lenses of his cameras. He was that rare talent who the world will sorely miss. Vaya con Dios, Galen and Barbara.

Since I began reading your column years ago, you've been an inspiration for me and many I know. Your work has helped me see and appreciate parts of the world, and life itself, that few would know, without your wonderful contributions to both. Police Officers, like myself, spend our lives immersed in everything that is wrong with this world, but viewing your work will always be a way for me to escape to better places and happier thoughts, and will continue to inspire me to reach new heights in my own photographic interests. Thank You for all you've done for our world!!

Galen's Rowell's perspective on life will be sorely missed. His column is the first thing I read when I get my copy of Outdoor Photographer. Though I never met Galen, I feel like I lost someone I knew for a long time. Now I will never get a chance to meet him. May his soul rest in peace.

I knew Galen from Outdoor Photographer columns, and I just got the October edition days ago with In Search of Chaos At Los Alamos, which I was reading. It's a sad surprise to discover that a photographer which images and opinions I've learned to admire and respect is gone to other unreachable landscapes. The same passion for adventure that took Gallen and wife Barbara around the world took them away from us.It feel strange to look at Mountain Light pages and know the lights are gone. But we still have their memory through images that talk about the love for life and this Earth. May they be well wherever they are...

Galen has touched my oldest daughter's and my lives. We went to one of Galen's seminars when his studio was located in Emeryville. After the two-day event, Kristen bought one of Galen's beautiful photographs and I went searching for the location in the Marin Headlands where Galen had taken one of his scenic photographs of the San Francisco Skyline and the gorgeous hues of red, orange and yellow in the sky from the sunset over the San Francisco Bay Area. Galen and Barbara will be sorely missed. Thank you for allowing the public to pay tribute to two wonderful people.

A muted, sad week has past since the first shock of reading of the passing of Galen and Barbara Rowell, a week filled with much reflection. Although I knew Galen only through several of his books and his magazine column, the depth and sincerity of his writing made me view Galen as a mentor and companion over the past 25 years. When, as a 22 year old, I was planning my first trek to the Himalayas in 1978, he deepened my expectations and my subsequent experience with his landmark 'In the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods'. This great work, together with 'Many People Come, Looking Looking', spurred me on to eventually make a mid-life journey to K2 myself, and with it, a roller-coaster experience of emotion that I cherish still. As an exploration geologist living for nearly 20 years in small communities within the outback of Australia, Galenās writing and photographs encouraged and refreshed me. Last year as I scrambled over the rocky Tasman Glacier in New Zealand at sunset, once more it was his lessons I tried to put into effect. Maybe someday, I imagined, I would recognise him on a high pass somewhere and attempt to express in person my thanks for the way he enriched my life. I hope to still do that someday. My condolences to the family of Galen and Barbaraās family in their time of grief.

Galen and Barbara were part of Yosemite National Park in particular. Their adventuresome natures, spirit and love of beauty are of this place, and all protected areas in the world. The National Park Service will miss them dearly, and is better for their caring and their work. They have left our world better loved and appreciated than they found it, and all of us are forever indebted to them for this gift.

When I decided take up phtography in 1992 as a hobby I was inspired (still to this day) by Galen's spirit of adventure. I have admired his and Barbara's attitude about giving to others and preserving our natural resourses, and I will think of those attibutes each time I click the shutter on my camera.

When truly great photographers pass on, we are all at a loss. How can we honor them, by admiring and enjoying what they have left for us to appreciate. This is why I make images. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting the Rowell's but I am deeply moved and now will make a greater effort to study their work for inspiration and strength from with which to draw my own image making.

I first seen one of Galens books about the same time I bought my first AF SLR. He was a true inspiration and inspired me to strive for the same high standards as his work. Galens articles in OP were the ones I always turned to and read first and will truely miss. Galen and Barbara rest in peace.

Galen Rowells landscapes touched my soul and his climbing photos touched my mind. I will carry his photos and his memory in my mind for the rest of my live. He was my hero. Galen and Barbara Rowells spirit will live in every mountain sunrise, in the early mountain light, in every breeze of mountain wind.

Since I first learned of Galen he has been my hero and mentor. I had the fortune of meeting Galen, that was the single most exciting moment of my life. I have several of his signed books, one of his prints, as well as a tattoo of one of his photos. Galen will always be my hero, I will love and miss him always, but I will continue to learn from him as well. The world without Galen Rowell is a lesser world. May the Rowell's rest in peace.

Just liked everyone else who read the Oct. OP, I was shocked by this tragic accident. It's such a pity. The photographic community will never be the same. Rest In Peace, Galen & Barbara

We have lost two contemporary giants of the imaging capture world. Yes, Galen did inspire me a lot, though I am his senior I had great respect for his outlook towards photography in general. His work in Patagonia, Chile is still the best that has been captured by a photographer. From where you are now Galen, I hope you can still see the light...and may I ask, what color is the wind today? Respectfully, Rodrigo Plaza Navarrete

It was hard to believe the report today in New Zealand's Photographer's Mail. Years ago when I lived in Santa Cruz, California, I met Galen briefly at a talk he gave there. I was deeply impressed by his personal integrity and dedication to his art. Coincidentally, our middle son is also named Galen÷a striking and unusual name about which we, as parents, are often quizzed. Our response invariably conjures up memories of Galen Rowell and his glorious images of the natural world. My heartfelt condolences to Galen and Barbara's families.
