While I never had the honor of meeting Galen & Barbara Rowell, I have spent many happy hours reading of his adventures and admiring his photos in "Outdoor Photographer." Those of us that are amateur photographers, and lead a more sedate lifestyle, lived vicariously through Galen and could pretend that his adventures and experiences were ours. I will miss that extra zip he put into my life. I am sure that God has already got a special place for Galen and Barbara. We will not forget them.

Galen's photography and advice through his column in Outdoor Photographer has been inspirational to me. I appreciate the way he opened-up the outdoors and demystified photography. It really is just about getting out there. I'll miss him.

I met Galen at a couple of lectures he put on at Humboldt State...one I remember one he did was about his search for Shangri la...his trips into Tibet and Nepal. The show was outstanding, multi-screen, images happening over and over, coupled with a heartfelt personal narrative about one of his favorite places on earth. After the show, we spent a half hour talking about taking pictures, the amount of film to shoot and such. He was eager to share his passions to anyone who had interest. At that point, I felt, he was my friend.

His photos were beautiful, his stories were engrossing. In a world with so many photographers and their pretences he was a breath of cool, fresh mountain air.... They both will be missed.

What a way to live; to seek out the purest moments of the most exquisite beauty, then skillfully, tenderly, capture a semblance of them, a treasure more valuable than any gems, for all of us to share. I never met Galen and Barbara, but Galen's book Mountain Light had a deep impact on me. He was one of my true teachers. I'm thankful for his generosity. The images live on, resoundingly.

Galen's photographs helped me experience, in a very real sense, places that I know I will never be able to visit and people that I will never meet. What his work gave, and will forever give, to all who experience it is immeasurable. Thank you.

Galen Rowell! You were a great inspiration to me! Over and over have I enjoyed "The Middle Kingdom" and "Mountain Light" and the rest of your photograpical work and the ever so sharp and wise writings. Your images of the Himalayan landscapes and peoples will always be on my mind. My sincere sympathy and thoughts to the family of the Rowells.

Galen, you have been and will always be a great source of inspiration to me as a photographer, naturalist and in my quest for truth and enlightenment in communion with Nature. I never met you in person, but I have felt very close to you ever since the first time I read one of your columns in Outdoor Photography 16 years ago. The world has been a better place to be in because you and Barbara were there. I miss you very much.

It is with Great sadeness I found out about the tragedy As a nature photographer, i have admired Galen's photography and read his articles since 84; i can say also, Galen was my photographic mentor. His love for photography, his understanding of Vision, was like no others. Galen, so often you came to mind as I was taking pictures along some trek either in N„pal, Galapagos or Patagonia, i came to think that one day, we must meet bump each other on the trail....Iâll think of you and love this plan¾te even more... Good bye see you where there is Light. My photography will continue to be inspired by Galen's spirit . God bless them both Thoughts and prayers to family and to Outdoor photogapherâs „ditors

Sept 18....Been out of touch, just found out about the tragedy today. Considering I never met either of them, I still find it hard to grasp the loss I feel. For the past thirty years I always had an eye for certain photos that I knew Galen had to have taken. I felt, as always, the spirit in which the photo was taken so that once again I was mentally transported to the Sierra's or some other destination that Galen made accessable to the masses. I now will scramble for my National Geographic (El Capitan... 1974 I think) and hope that the next series of climbs that await both Galen and Barbara are as magnificent as those that they have left for us.....Thoughts and prayers to family members and friends.
