Sausalito Art Festival Photography Gallery Presents Special Galen Rowell Exhibit
The Sausalito Art Festival has announced that its Photography Gallery at the festival this year will showcase the work of legendary mountaineer and photojournalist Galen Rowell. The exhibit, entitled Sierra Highs: California Landscapes by Galen Rowell, is a curated collection of work featuring Rowell's climbing adventures as well as his ability to capture the exquisite beauty of the earth's wild places.
Recipient of the Ansel Adams Award in 1984 for his contribution to wilderness photography, Rowell (1940 – 2002) made numerous trips to many high-altitude destinations. The Festival Gallery will showcase many of these images from the Sierra Nevada and other California terrains bathed in mountain light.
Bay Area born and bred, Rowell pioneered a special brand of participatory wilderness photography in which the photographer transcends being an observer with a camera to become an active participant in the image being photographed. Often made in the course of his climbing adventures, Rowell's landscapes have a visual power derived from what he described as "a continuing pursuit in which the art becomes the adventure and the adventure becomes the art."
During his lifetime, Rowell photographed and wrote major features for Life, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Outside and Time, and published a popular illustrated monthly column in Outdoor Photographer. He authored a total of 18 photo books including a number published in partnership with Sierra Club Books.
This is the seventh year that the Art Festival's Photography Gallery has offered exceptional work by fine photographers in a variety of genres. The Gallery will be open during the Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday August 30 and 31, and 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, September 1.
The curated color prints will be available for purchase, and the proceeds will go to support the ongoing non-profit work of the Art Festival Foundation.
The 62nd Sausalito Art Festival is Labor Day Weekend, August 30 through September 1, 2014 along the scenic Sausalito waterfront at Marinship Park. In addition to the Galen Rowell exhibit, 260 artists will be showcasing a wide range of fine art and there will be continuous live music on two stages every day.
